Australian Negritos airbrushed out of existence - but they are coming back!

June 2002

In anthropology, as in theology, opinions are held all the more firmly the fewer facts there are to back them up. The existence of Australian Negritos (also known as Barrineans, Atherton Plateau pygmies or Queensland Negritos) had been widely accepted until the 1960s when they ceased to fit the rising tide of politically correctmess in Australia - and were quietly airbrushed out of existence.

The Australian magazine Quadrant in its June 2002 issue has published an article by Keith Windschuttle and Tim Gillin on how, when and why the Australian Negritos have become non-persons. We strongly recommend you read The Extinction of the Australian Pygmies. after which you might care to ponder the subject of "facts, fiction and wishful thinking in anthropology".
